Happy First Fair Weekend!

First Impressions are not all they are cracked up to be. They are affected by much more than things that an individual can control. There are personal perceptions, prejudgments, societal expectations. You might be able to control what you wear, how you do your hair and make-up, and you can prepare for certain situations. There are so many things that you can’t control about how someone is going to see you when they first meet you.

You don’t know if someone has shared information about you that may or may not be accurate or if they have been told something positive or negative about who you are. You don’t know if they have a personal preference for style, hair color, or specific jargon. What if they pictured you a certain way by the information they had and you are completely unlike what they anticipated. You can’t control what people will assume about you or how they may have pictured you prior to meeting you. All you can control in a situation is how you react to it. The best thing you can do is try to see somebody for who they are, not what they look like or other superficial qualities.

There are some situations where presenting your best self is strongly suggested. If you are in search of a job: handing out resumes, picking up applications, or going to an interview. If you are going on a first date with someone you don’t know well, then you will want to be aware of how you present yourself. Ways you can help present your best self: Good Personal Hygiene (wash and comb your hair, bathe/shower, wear nicer clothes that are clean and wrinkle-free, brush your teeth and show your smile), be prepared (show up on time, know where you are going and who you need to speak to), be honest when answering questions but stay on topic and ask questions to show your interest.

Remember to be appropriate for the situation. You may choose to dress different if you are going to pick up an application than if you are heading to an interview. If you are going on a date make sure you know enough about what you are doing that you can dress for the occasion, some dates are more casual and others can be fancier.
