Happy Friday, have a great weekend!

Constantly Growing

There has been a lot of personal growth happening around PILR lately. We have started a journey towards becoming more self-sustaining and are working with a consultant to create a Social Enterprise. The Hutchinson Community Foundation provided us with a grant to work with the consultant, Jean Block, to help us create a successful Business Plan.

What is a social Enterprise?
social enterprise is an organization or initiative that marries the social mission of a non-profit or government program with the market-driven approach of a business. (https://socialenterprise.us/about/social-enterprise/)

Why does PILR need a social enterprise?
Social Enterprise Statement: PILR staff encourages the people we work with to become self-sufficient members of their communities. PILR wants to model that behavior by establishing a social enterprise to become self-sufficient and less dependent on grants and contracts. We would like to find out if there is need for our enterprise idea before we can continue. One idea that we came up with is Training for Businesses.

There are a lot of steps to creating a social enterprise. We are at the market research step, which requires everyone to get out of the office and talk to people in our community. I do alright talking to people one on one, but I have a much harder time speaking in front of a group of strangers. However, it is important that we have our individual growth in order to contribute to overall organizational growth.

No one is immune from this; our brave leader has mentioned her discomfort with the process. Though, she also reinforces the need for us do this work and get the feedback that we need to succeed. The more input and ideas we can get from our community members and business, the more like we are to fill a need and help sustain our organization with unrestricted funding.

Some ideas we are discussing in the community:

  • Personal Assistant Services
  • Training for Businesses
  • Training for Individuals

If you have input you would like to share or to set up an appointment please contact one of our offices.
